The word enlightenment is familiar to most people who consider themselves to be intelligent, curious and spiritual. If you are a light worker, you seek it on a constant basis.

My question for you today is “How are you more enlightened than you were on September 11, 2001?”

This occurred to me as I spoke to a room full of social workers and nurses last Tuesday morning. My message introduced this audience to the possibility that Emotional Freedom Techniques/EFT is the solution to the burnout/compassion fatigue health professionals face due to continuous exposure to human trauma.   I can now rely on over 100 clinical studies to convince the skeptics. Once we did a group demonstration, the shift landed them firmly into believing.  A real connection was made.  It’s easier now than when I started sharing this strange process in 2001.

The past 17 years have changed me (and US) in dramatic ways. I’ve lived a life of relative comfort, yet I am no longer naïve about the many forms of human pain and suffering. I’ve personally helped thousands of victims and seen first hand how childhood trauma has far reaching consequences. I’ve witnessed how successful suburban adults carry the emotional burden of shame, guilt, anger, regret and grief and how this can result in serious pain and health problems. Most importantly, I’ve seen this weight lift time after time in ways I didn’t believe were possible. Tapping has heightened my awareness and intuition.  My own worries and fears have melted away as I dared to use EFT in my darkest moments.  This healing power became more evident last year following my husband’s cardiac arrest and brain injury. Enlightenment continues as I travel to new places, see new sights and meeting fascinating people.

Enlightenment is more than learning. It is a knowing that comes through transformational, Divine experience. It is deeply personal, yet it allows a connection to a wider perspective. Yes, getting older brings enlightenment as we seek to leave a legacy, reminded that our time on earth is limited.

How are you more enlightened? Allow your heart to lead you to the next enlightening encounter. It may be through travel, service, education or a moment of connection. You never know, so stay open to the possibilities. Enlightenment is a never-ending process that keeps you hungering for more.
