After a night of contemplation and connecting in with my furry partner Gracie, she has made it clear to me that the highest and best for today is to go forward with the surgery. We are scheduled to check in this morning and the surgery to remove her spleen will take place in the early afternoon. Please keep those prayers coming for Gracie, Dr. Holcomb, our vet and the team who will care for her at Animal Clinic Northview. They are outstanding and she will get the very best care.
I am very grateful to every one of my friends who offered prayers, information, links and stories of their own personal struggles making this difficult decision for their dogs. I could feel your hearts and your tears through every word.
Gracie and I share a special history. If you’ve read my book, you know that she came to me as a 6-week old puppy, just a week after I quit my last job, which had also coincided with the sudden loss of my 4-year old Golden Retriever Kelly. Gracie became a joyful symbol of my transition to entrepreneur/coach, helping greet and settle my clients during the workdays and always at my side the rest of the time. She is truly the best dog and receptionist I have ever had. She has a fan club because she touched so many lives in her own special way through the 13+ years we have worked side by side.
Even now, she is sleeping quietly at my feet as I write this in the early morning hours. Aside from being deaf, she can climb stairs, eat and get outside to relieve herself just fine. She is not yet ready to leave me from all indications. The surgery today will remove her infected spleen to prevent a rupture and sudden bleed-out. That would be a horrific event for both of us, and knowing she can live for many more months without the spleen, my sweet friend deserves this option to be more comfortable for now.
I am clearly facing the reality of loss and know this 13+ year old dog has already lived beyond her expected life span. Gracie could choose to leave us during surgery. I am preparing myself for what may come. For now, she’s getting all the love and care I can offer.
Give your loved ones a hug for me today. Honor and appreciate the special pets that have graced your lives. Pet owners know what a precious gift we are given. Love is eternal and with you forever.
Prayers for you sweet Gracie…receptionist extraordinaire. You are very special and needed to be with your family a little longer.
As my dogs Chloe & Dexter head out the door to work I think of you Gracie. uch love and prayers.
I am so happy Gracie is doing better. Your doing your best for her while she is with you, she’s been with you and George many years. I will keep you all in my prayers.
