I have always believed that when humor is missing, God must have stepped out for a moment. Humor is part of God’s plan for us. Being silly and acting foolish serves a greater good – bringing healing, communication and a disruption to tension and resistance. Humor can be unexpected or it can build from subtle suggestions and small gestures.
I love watching comedies and comedians. They are brilliant creative beings. Jerry Seinfeld makes us roll into giggles by gently mocking our behaviors of unawareness. Then there are goofballs like Will Ferrell and Kramer (Michael Richards) who can be so physically zany and extreme. They allow themselves to be total fools in public and come away as a heroes. They do what we wish we could do – if we were more daring and brave.
We know that comedians are not fools but rather teachers who let us examine life from a new angle. They allow us to see how we take ourselves way too seriously then teach us how to laugh together.
I may never hope to be as witty or as funny as the comedians I admire, but I will continue to study the way they connect us, entertain us and make us see life in a new way.
God bless the fools!
