Its very easy to jump into big plans for 2008 as New Years Day approaches. While setting goals and objectives is important, it’s perhaps more important to first take stock of the year that is ending.
Have you taken time to look at your year 2007 in review? It can teach you about yourself and the changes possible in the year ahead as you plan for 2008. It also provides a pause for gratitude and happy memories.
Grab your 2007 calendar, some paper and a pen then consider the questions below as you take time to guide your own review process:
1. What accomplishments from the past year are your greatest joy? W’hat have you learned through your successful accomplishments?
2. What was disappointing about the year? Which goals were not achieved? Did you set goals? What have you learned from these disappointments? Will you do anything differently next year because of them?
3. In what ways did you keep balance in your life? What is the status of your health, financial security, relationships, spirituality, career and contributions? Are there some areas that are strong while others are ignored or weak? What does this tell you about the goals possible for 2008?
4. Who made the greatest positive impact on your life in 2007? How? Have you thanked this person openly?
5. Who are the new people who entered your life in this year? What did they add to your experience?
6. Which people left your life during the past year? Are you grieving? Do you need to forgive, let go or reconcile something to provide closure?
7. If you had the chance to live this year over again, how would you do it differently?
Taking this time for this kind of reflection will give you plenty of material for thought. Allow yourself a few days to just sit with your reflections. You may even choose to read over your notes a few times. Remember that every journey begins with those baby steps and consider what kinds of baby steps would be most helpful as the new year begins. Even if you have big plans, baby steps are always part of the process.
When you are finally ready to commit to a few written goals, keep them SMART – Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-specific. Create a balanced, deliberate and prosperous year by incorporating your history into your present dreams. As you do so, remain positive and grateful that you have the freedom to create each experience in the present moment.
