Today marks the one-year anniversary of my husband George Muller’s sudden cardiac arrest and subsequent extended recovery. Looking back on that fateful day, no matter what others told me, my truth was always that he would come back. I knew his inner drive combined with our love for each other would bring it to reality.
One week ago, my faith was again tested. George had been feeling so well that he was running outside again, with his doctor’s blessing. He signed up for the Westside Catholic Center’s 5K run last Saturday and finished with a respectable time. I watched him carefully as he cooled down near the finish line. After about 5 minutes we walked over to our friends, then suddenly he collapsed. He quickly regained consciousness. Fortunately there was a fire station across the street where paramedics could confirm that his vital signs were normal. Yes, it was scary, but again a feeling of calm prevailed. My inner truth told me that I had witnessed his pacemaker performing the exact function it was there to do.
When he followed up, the cardiologist confirmed that George had gone into an abnormal heart rhythm, received one shock and regained a normal beat. We still don’t know why this happens, but the truth from this event was helpful. George will also take it easy and realizes that he needs to slow down for now.
Life is short and we both vow not to waste it or put things off. It’s fitting that on this anniversary, we depart for an adventure on the Rhine in Europe. There’s so much to recognize and celebrate about how everything worked out and how hundreds of people stepped up to support us, pray with us, help with his care and bring him back to a normal life. We are truly blessed!
