I found myself on a deck with a steamy cup of Cafe Verona, my journal and the sun on my face this morning and smiled realizing how much I needed this very simple vacation. The outer banks of North Carolina is a place that I have carried in my heart since my first visit in third grade and countless weeks of vacation here in almost every stage of my life. In medation this is where I often take myself, especially on a cold winter’s day…..BUT TODAY I AM REALLY HERE AND IT IS AWESOME
Here’s the view from my chair:
It has been 5 years since my last visit to this beautiful place. That visit in 2006 was a stark contrast. It took place just 3 days after I was diagnosed with a strange hyperthyroid condition. I arrived on that vacation as an invalid of sorts. On two new medications, I was cautioned by my doctor not to drive and to relax as much as possible. I remember a frightening 135 bpm heart rate, pain and fatique throughout my body. Each night I had severe leg cramps and was barely able to sleep because my pounding heart kept me awake. A short walk down to the ocean or a flight of stairs exhausted me. Unable to enjoy walks or even sitting still, one thing I was able to do really well during that vacation was eat whatever I liked without gaining weight. I could also drink more wine than usual without adverse affects. I basically became a gluton for the week and embraced that experience for the blessing it was.
What a contrast to NOW! I slept like a rock last night. A long run on the beach this morning was effortless and flowing. My mind is clear and full of joyful thoughts. My dog Gracie is with us and she loves this new environment. I adore seeing the wonder and curiousity through her doggie experience. Surrounded by people I love, who are all enjoying themselves, this is exactly the vacation I asked for and received. Sending prayers of gratitude for a beautiful week of vacation unfolding. Excuse me – I feel the water calling me.
