You never know where your next lesson will come from. Mine came from a group of nine exuberant 6-year olds. Last night I accepted an invitation from my friend Nicole Vigh to face this new challenge as a professional speaker. The topic was COURAGE and I had 20 minutes. How hard could that be after speaking on Confidence the night before for NAWBO Cleveland? In a circle around me the nine: all wiggling, chattering and eager to engage. It felt like being in a pen of puppies! I soon learned that they are already quite brave. Their fears included being in the dark, bugs, spiders and snakes. We explored how everyone has different “super-powers” and we held the “power pose” from Amy Cuddy’s TED talk for 2 minutes, although I swear there was no need for it with this group. Their innocence keeps them far from the things grown women worry about.
The last thing I planned to do with them was introduce tapping/EFT. As soon as I began the exercise, everything shifted. They tapped easily. It became very quiet and they focused. The girls totally engaged, followed the the sequence in synch, without falling to distraction. When I added affirmation statements, they repeated easily. These 6-year olds were amazingly better at this on the first try than thousands of adults I have worked with! If I could do it over again, I would have started with tapping.
I was grateful to have Nicole, a former teacher, in the room with me. Keeping their attention was difficult and took energy. I have great respect for anyone who wrangles a classroom full of this age all day, let alone a full school year. You must be exhausted! I also see how valuable tapping could be for a teacher and the children too.
I’m ready for my next room full of puppies
