Are you a force creating safety or chaos? Any one who wishes to be of greater influence must cultivate the ability to skillfully balance change while also creating trust, safety and a sense of hope.   You can be that kind of change agent!

As a coach specializing in strategies to neutralize chaos, unpleasant thoughts, ugly memories and fears, I now realize that the foundation to all of this is mastering the 5 keys below to create safety for others.

  1.  Set positive intention – The HIGHEST and BEST for ALL involved. Creating safety for others requires a big picture approach as well as being flexible with your personal agenda. Mindfully asking for solutions that serve all involved set the tone for energetic support for a sacred and safe connection. By putting out this prayer of intention, you will be surprised by the win-win solutions that emerge for action.
  2. Be an example of calm clarity. Know that your energy is contagious and that your clarity and physical sense of calm helps others feel safe. Nurture this by taking care of your physical body. Breathe deeply and pause before you speak. Use silence and eye contact to convey your clarity and sincerity.
  3. Find common connection. Every encounter gives you opportunities to find what you have in common and to go even deeper with people you already know. Ask questions, listen and help people notice when common ground exists. Focus on what is shared rather than on what isolates and divides.
  4. Witness and accept without judgment. Decisions and action require judgment, however making obvious judgments about people can be experienced as threatening and dangerous. By withholding judgment, you empower people to reveal their true self in your presence.  Be willing to reveal your own truth openly in this process too. This nurtures an environment of safety and clarity.
  5. Honor confidentiality and request permission. Once you open up and reveal your truth, you also become vulnerable. Honor and protect that vulnerability by honoring confidentiality and asking for permission before moving forward with healing work, action, implementation or agreements. Clarity and safety thrive when healthy boundaries are in place. You have the power to ask for boundaries and to also protect yours.

These 5 keys work equally well for a variety of settings, including intimate relationships, business negotiation, parenting, healing interventions, professional speaking, weekend retreats and group facilitation. Are you using them? Could you do a better job?   Start experimenting with these keys and pay attention to what you notice. Post your comments or connect with me privately. The world need not be a scary place, and you will be a more successful part of it when you create safety for others.
